How you’ll make an impact:

The Controls Engineer will oversee material handling and automation controls in our distribution center. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining current equipment, implementing upgrades, and developing a strategic roadmap for future enhancements. This role requires a strong technical background in PLC’s, machine to human interfaces, and automation systems, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Be the point of contact to troubleshooting and advise when major downtime occurs internally and externally with vendors.

  • Manage and oversee all aspects of material handling and automation controls within the distribution center.

  • Maintain and troubleshoot existing equipment to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime.

  • Develop and implement upgrade plans to enhance efficiency, reliability, and scalability of control systems.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations, engineering, IT and vendor to define requirements and priorities for control system projects.

  • Lead the design, programming, and commissioning of PLCs and machine to human interfaces for new equipment installations and upgrades.

  • Develop and maintain documentation including control system diagrams, manuals, schematics and procedures.

  • Train and mentor junior engineers and technicians on control system best practices and procedures.

  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in automation technology to recommend innovative solutions for continuous improvement.

  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations in all control system designs and implementations.

Must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related field.

  • Strong technical expertise in generating new PLC programs using TIA (Total Integrated Automation) SIMATIC's Manager, WinCC, C/C++ software.

  • Certified Controls Engineer (CCE), Control Systems Engineering (CSE) or equivalent certifications related to role.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in control systems engineering within an automated distribution center environment, with a focus on material handling and automation controls.

  • Great written, verbal, and presentation abilities.

  • Strong technical expertise in computer-aided design and drafting software.

  • Strong technical expertise in reading, interpreting, and updating electrical schematics.

  • Strong technical expertise in HMI development and industrial communication protocols.

  • Proven experience in developing and executing upgrade plans for control systems, including equipment selection, integration, and testing.

  • Solid understanding of material handling equipment such as conveyors, sorters, AS/RS systems, etc.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrate excellence in programming, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of controls components and systems.

Preferred skills and experience:

  • Experience with project management methodologies and tools is a plus.

  • Advanced mathematical reasoning

  • Critical organizational leadership skills or certificates, i.e., Root Cause Corrective Action, Failure Effects Mode Analysis, Lean Six Sigma, Business Process Management, and/or Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA).
