Job Summary

The Wood Shop and Digital Fabrication Coordinator position in the Department of Art and Art History directly supervises and manages the wood shop area, and (in collaboration with the Fabrication Lab Manager) also is responsible for and coordinates the use of the digital fabrication lab. The wood shop and digital fabrication labs are in the Visual Arts Center (VAC) on the main campus. These labs (in conjunction with the metal shop, visual resources center, and others) play a critical role in supporting a wide range of student and faculty coursework and research. Students use and rely on these resources, which include traditional as well as digital fabrication tools. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Development and Application of Safety Policies & Procedures:

  • Responsible for the customization of a safety training program to introduce the students to the use of tools and materials in the wood shop and digital fabrication areas.

  • Trains GPTIs to conduct the training, as well as management of a database to track individuals training level, and corresponding access to different machines, tools, and processes.

  • Writes and creates coursework for training programs, which require research and analysis into the most current technologies in the field of woodworking and digital fabrication.

Inventory Management:

  • Responsible for maintaining tools, materials, and supplies in the wood shop & digital fabrication areas, as well as making recommendations for equipment repair, purchase, and disposal.

  • Handle the inventory of consumables, including the ordering, tracking, and storage requirements for items such as screws, nails, sandpaper, lumber, hardware, adhesives, and finishes.

Additional Labs:

  • Support additional labs based on the needs of students and faculty.

  • Examples include a new digital fabrication lab, a CNC router lab, a spray booth, and a hot works lab.

Laboratory Tech Support:

  • Provide expertise and technical guidance and direction regarding the use of the woodshop / additional labs (and corresponding tools and processes), safety requirements for the use of such tools, and instructional guidance for students working on a wide variety of projects applying a wide variety of materials and processes in these areas.

  • Support safety and play a critical role in advising students on what tools and processes are safe for a particular task.

Laboratory Budget Management:

  • Position manages a budget for the Woodshop that includes hourly student workers as well as materials, new tools and machinery, consumables, maintenance and repair costs, improvement projects etc.

  • Must conduct research and work with students, staff, and faculty to determine the needs for the completion of course work and research.

Supervision (Student Employees)

  • Position has direct supervision of a graduate student, as well as several student employees each semester.

  • Position is responsible for hiring and training employees, scheduling work, assigning tasks, monitoring progress and workflows, and establishing work standards.

  • Must ensure employees are conducting themselves in a professional manner, and are enforcing proper safety protocols, policies, and procedures.

What You Should Know

This position is required to be on campus Monday-Friday with regular working hours of 8:00am-5:00pm.

What We Require

  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.

  • 4+ years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position OR a combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to 4 years.

What You Will Need

  • Experience setting up, running, maintaining, and trouble-shooting a wide variety of woodworking machinery and tools including table saws, planers, jointers, bandsaws, drill presses, edge & disc sanders, routers, power tools, and hand tools.

  • Proficiency setting up, running, maintaining, and trouble-shooting digital fabrication equipment including 3D printers, Laser cutters, and vinyl cutters.

  • Expertise creating digital drawings using design software.

  • Literacy in: Windows and Apple operating systems, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft office, Microsoft Teams.

  • Willingness to learn online platforms such as CU Marketplace, Skillsoft, ConCur, Canvas, etc.

  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.

  • Sensitivity to and appreciation of different forms of Art and Art making, with the ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students from many different backgrounds and experience levels.

  • Strong commitment to safety and ensuring workspaces are clean, safe, and efficient to work in.
