Boston Public Schools Supervisor of Attendance, Court-Based (SY24-25) in Boston, Massachusetts

REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Opportunity Youth ACADEMIC/NON-ACADEMIC: Non-Academic POSITION OVERVIEW:The Supervisor of Attendance, Court-Based (Court SOA) resides in the Department of Opportunity Youth, reporting to the Senior Director of Opportunity Youth. The Court SOA is responsible for serving as an integral liaison and representative between the Supervisors of Attendance, Field-Based (Field SOAs) and the Suffolk County Juvenile Court, to advance the mission of Boston Public Schools. The Court SOA represents the district in all truancy court related matters, ensuring that all appropriate data and documentation has been provided by the school and the Field SOAs. In addition, the Court SOA supports preparation of case documentation, monitoring of court data, ongoing communication with probation officers (POs). The Court SOA maintains up-to-date knowledge of the juvenile court processes and procedures and communicates changes to the team. The primary worksite of the Court SOA is the Suffolk County Juvenile Court. RESPONSIBILITIES:School Support, Collaboration and Community Engagement Work closely with court staff, Field SOAs and community partners, in attendance­ related matters. Recommend and provide appropriate prevention and intervention strategies and best practices to improve individual student attendance in the court setting. Prepare, file, and present cases referred to the Suffolk County Juvenile Court. Confirm that a meeting with the parent(s)/guardian(s) was conducted, or attempted, by the school prior to their appearance in court. Participate in all requisite truancy related court proceedings, including fact-finding hearings. Secure court dates and probation officers as necessary. Ensure all case outcomes are communicated to the assigned Field SOA for forwarding to appropriate school staff. Collaborate with colleagues to support district attendance initiatives as time permits. Advance court truancy cases as needed. Maintain court case notes and engage in appropriate record keeping relative to court cases. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Opportunity Youth, as long as the Supervisor of Attendance is not assigned any duties covered by the collective bargaining agreement of any other bargaining unit. Systems, Procedures and Data Management Educate and provide technical assistance to court-based staff as appropriate to ensure understanding and alignment of work streams. Maintain expertise in prevention and intervention strategies, the use of the attendance intervention plan (AIP) system, data systems and tools and attendance reporting processes and protocol. Maintain strong knowledge of available services, supports and access points within OY and other BPS departments and community partners. Outreach to field SOAs when a summons is returned unserved. Maintain in-depth knowledge of the services and resources referred to students and families through the juvenile court. Use data tools, systems and reports to identify court-related trends and improvement areas. Distribute lists of chronically absent students and students at risk of court referral, by school, to Field SOAs. Truancy Laws, Attendance Standards and Court ProcessMaintain a confidential database, with case status, court dates and disposition of all active, continued or closed cases representing BPS in truancy court. Ensure access and ongoing communication of case status to Field SOAs. Maintain a deep understanding and provide guidance regarding Massachusetts Truancy Laws, attendance processes and procedures, as well as district and state priorities related to chronic absenteeism. Attend meetings with representatives from the Suffolk County Juvenile Court, such as the Probation Department, Clerk Magistrate, and Chief Justice. Collect documentation related to all preparations of court complaints and/or court petitions related to attendance. Ensure access to all appropriate data, documentation and case information to represent chronic cases referred to the Suffolk County Juvenile Court. Maintain open communication with probation officers (POs), court staff, and Field SOAs to ensure mutual awareness of student attendance trends, before and after court, intervention strategies and coordination of supports. Serve as district expert in truancy court processes and proceedings.
