State of Massachusetts Inpatient Attending Physician in Boston, Massachusetts

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking an experienced Inpatient Attending Physician who will oversee inpatient medical service by providing clinical leadership for the patient care team. The incumbent will support and coordinate the inpatient and discharge process, and other health services. They will promote the patient care team’s compliance with hospital policies and procedures, and its adoption of patient safety best practices. The Inpatient Attending Physician will teach trainees, consult with other clinicians, and participate in medical staff responsibilities. /_Hours:_/Schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday between the hours 8:30AM- 5PM. /_Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_/// * Provides supervision and oversight to the advance practice providers and direct patient care for the community Inpatient unit. * May coordinate the Correctional Health inpatient admission and discharge processes with the DOC sites and medical vendors. * Advises the medical department leadership on new patient areas of improvement, best practice, and collaboration. * Provides a minimum of three (3) half-day outpatient clinic per week. * Covers the teaching service up to four (4) two-weeks block per year; ensures supervision of the graduate medical trainees and students, provides direct patient care and coverage for four (4) weekends and one (1) holiday while rounding in the Teaching service. * Performs and documents the history and physical examination, plan of care of patients on a timely basis. * Documents or ensures the documentation on a timely basis of all essential patient care data and information in the electronic medical record consistent with hospital and medical staff policy and procedure. * Complies with Hospital policies and procedures and Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and ethics of medical practice. * May participate in community cross-coverage and on-call coverage as assigned. * Prepares and delivers four-hour educational presentations to medical residents and/or hospital staff annually. * Participates in hospital and medical department committees as delegated. /_Required Qualifications:_/// * Understanding of the theories, practices, methods, and principles of general medicine relative to the care and treatment of the physically ill. * Knowledge of training methods and techniques. * Plan and conduct training and instruction in medical related matters for other physicians. * Ability to supervise resident staff, nurses, and allied health practitioners where applicable, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining subordinates training needs and providing or arranging for such training, motivating subordinates to work effectively; determining the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action. * Direct, coordinate, and communicate with professional and technical staff in community health and medical services. * Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others, including patients, nurses, and other physicians. * Ability to carry out administrative responsibilities of senior staff. * Knowledge and credentials satisfactory to be a medical educator. * Capacity to work collaboratively with other clinical disciplines. * Knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of general internal medicine as denoted by delineation of clinical privileges to include diagnosis, management and special procedures. /_/Preferred Qualifications:/_/ * Knowledge of state operating procedures as they impact on the operation of the hospital. /_About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:_/ Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity. Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients.
