Position Purpose:

Provides day-to-day monitoring of equipment, lab tests, and maintenance activities. Performs these functions at all Water, Wastewater and associated Facilities. Holds after hours on call duties and works in after hour emergency situations as needed.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Operates equipment manually and through instrument panels, computer terminals, and programmable logic control units in an assigned area.

  • Performs field tests (chemical, physical, and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process and odor control units or alter unit processes.

  • Monitors and observes operating conditions, records observations and data in area shift log, and diagnoses operational problems and takes corrective action.

  • Follows process control procedures for assigned areas, verifies and reports suspected malfunctions and variances to supervisor.

  • Prepares chemical solutions, and monitors process chemical supplies and recommends reorder.

  • Samples wastewater, water, biosolids, and gases according to schedule and services automatic samplers and flow meters.

  • Performs process lab tests, and routine instrument calibration.

  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance, lubrication and minor adjustments on machines and related equipment which may include pumps, engines, centrifuges, generators, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, dryers, chemical feed and odor control, disinfection equipment, vacuum filters and belt presses. Promptly reports any operational problems with machines or equipment to Leadman/Supervisor.

  • Learns to inspect and becomes proficient at mechanical troubleshooting to determine repairs needed. Dismantles equipment to gain access to and repairs defective parts using hand tools, power tools and precision measuring and testing devices. Re-assembles and tests equipment ensuring safe and efficient operating condition is restored. Learns to troubleshoot hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic equipment and instrumentation

  • Must have the ability to operate computer maintenance management system (software)

  • Operates vehicles.

  • Assures work is performed in a safe and professional manner by following established safety, operating, and emergency response procedures.

  • Performs cleanup and housekeeping tasks for work area, tools, equipment, facilities, and grounds.

  • Performs the duties of Plant Operator and related duties as needed.

Work Environment:

  • Requires working in outside and inside environments with noise and all temperatures and climatic conditions, must be able to work under adverse weather conditions for extended periods.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Requires good reading, math, writing, scientific, and verbal communication skills; a mechanical aptitude; and the ability to read, interpret, and record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, computer consoles, and other equipment.

  • Must demonstrate a working ability to use computer programs for process control.

  • Must have the ability to diagnose process problems in single or multiple unit processes and take remedial action; and to troubleshoot basic equipment.

  • Requires the ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.

  • Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Requires obtaining a Wastewater II within 24 months of appointment and a Wastewater III when all Indiana State requirements are completed.

  • Requires a WT2 in the State of Indiana within 24 months of appointment and a WT3 when all Indiana State requirements are completed.

  • Requires a DSL in the State of Indiana when all Indiana State requirements at completed.

  • Must have a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform tasks standing, walking, climbing stairs, squatting, lifting and while hands are extended above head or in front of body.
