Provides faculty development support in the area of service-learning and experiential learning. Consults on effective pedagogy, assessment, and/or course design and assists with strategies for student success.

This is an in-person position on the Boise State campus, although up to two remote work days per week are negotiable. This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.

Department Overview:

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is the nucleus of a university culture that values teaching and learning. We support, promote, and enhance evidence-based teaching practices to positively impact all student learning and success. CTL staff foster dialogue, scholarship, innovation, and excellence in learner-centered teaching, and promote teaching and scholarship that mutually enhance one another for the benefit of students, faculty, and the community. The CTL reports to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies in the Provost\'s Office.

Level Scope:

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.

Essential Functions:

The Specialist will focus 60% of their time to:

  • Collaborate with members of the CTL\'s Service-Learning team in the design and implementation of programs that support faculty in effectively designing service-learning experiences and experiential learning activities.
  • Consult with individual instructors to analyze needs and determine goals for support of their community-engaged learning activities and experiential learning assignments.
  • Design and facilitate pedagogy workshops and other interventions that support faculty in planning and facilitating service-learning and experiential learning (both online and in person).
  • Contribute to the delivery of recurring educational development services and resources that enhance community-engaged learning, including facilitating classroom reflection sessions and supporting instructors in preparing students for meaningful and effective community engagement.
  • Contribute to department communication of ideas to instructors; provide instructors with access to information via University platforms.
  • Collaborate with other units in support of campus initiatives in which the CTL is a partner.
  • Engage with current trends and technologies in the field of higher education through participation in conferences, professional organizations and/or professional development opportunities, as well as reviewing the literature.
  • Engage, together with CTL staff, in ongoing documentation, assessment, and improvement of the work of the unit.

The Specialist will focus 35% of their time to:

  • Design and implement communication strategies, outreach, presentations, and events to promote service-learning and recognize service-learning participants
  • Collaborate with the Service-Learning Director to track, assess, and report on service-learning
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a graduate assistant to assist with above duties

The Specialist will focus 5% of their time to:

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Secondary functions of the job

  • Provide support for campus initiatives dealing with experiential learning
  • Contribute to educational development through service, scholarship, and/or participation in regional or national organ zations and professional development opportunities when opportunities allow.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience with and knowledge of effective teaching strategies about experiential learning and service-learning.
  • Basic understanding of other pedagogical practices that support all student learning.
  • Strong verbal, written and visual communication skills.
  • Effective facilitation and consultation skills.
  • Ability to be both a collaborative team member and to work independently.
  • Ability to draw from the literature around effective teaching and faculty development to inform work.

Minimum

Qualifications:

Bachelor\'s and 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree
  • Experience teaching college courses
  • Two years of academic experience in the area of experiential learning and community engagement
  • At least one year of experience working with faculty members.
  • Ability to facilitate professional development in various formats for professional audiences, including facilitating in-person and virtual events.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a sense of civic responsibility in students
