Johns Hopkins University CTY Online Programs Instructor – USVI MAPS Academy  ​​​ in Boise, Idaho

We are seeking a CTY Online Programs Instructor-USVI Math Academy for Promising Scholars, who will mainly be responsible for teaching elementary and middle school level in a hybrid virtual math course (grades 5 – 8). Synchronous work will occur between 7-11 AM Eastern Standard Time Monday-Friday and will consist of direct instruction, team meetings, and co teaching with an in-person instructor located in the USVI. Other synchronous work will be having individual and/or group meetings with students for reteaching, materials review, or general subject matter questions. The individual will also be responsible for promptly replying to emails from students, parents/guardians, program leadership, and co-teachers; providing detailed feedback on assessments according to a rubric; and actively checking in on all assigned students to ensure progress through the course. Teachers will intervene with extra synchronous in person meetings to support the students. Phone calls to students, parents and schools may be required. The instructor is the student's main contact point and he or she ensures that every student has an outstanding learning experience with CTY. While class times have not yet been finalized, candidates will likely need to be available to teach from 7-11 AM Eastern each weekday for this position.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Host live, synchronous, virtual class sessions daily for elementary or middle school math students in the USVI.

  • Host live, synchronous group work sessions to review material, reteach, gage understanding.

  • Host live, synchronous individual meetings with students, parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators to collaborate on student support and success.

  • Monitor student progress and assist students in accomplishing established learning objectives.

  • Use distance education technologies, primarily Moodle, Zoom, Teams, and e-mail to interact with teachers, students, parents/guardians, and program leadership.

  • Provide timely feedback to students and their parents on coursework and progress.

  • Manage student behavior and discipline in the virtual classroom environment.

  • Coordinate with an on-site instructor in students’ school to aide in their progression.

  • Promptly reply to emails, providing detailed feedback on assessments according to a rubric.

  • Work closely with program manager and instructor supervisor on course related issues and work as a team member to provide support to other CTY Online instructors and USVI on-site instructors. Attend weekly team meeting.

  • Submit hours worked via established system according to schedule provided by CTY.

  • Review and provide curriculum materials for a course designed for academically talented students, including objectives, lecture scripts, assignments, activities/exercises, quizzes, exams, solution files, rubrics, and other course related materials.

Additional Duties Include

  • Assisting with the development of course related materials.

  • Updating and developing curriculum.

  • Participating in new course development.

  • Working closely with program managers on course related issues.

  • Assisting with the training of other instructors; and working as a team member to provide support to other CTY Online instructors, as necessary.

  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the US or live in an area in which JHU has an authorized business entity.

  • While class times have not yet been finalized, candidates will likely need to be available to teach from 7-11 AM Eastern each weekday for this position.

  • The successful candidate(s) for this position will be subject to a pre-employment background check.

  • All employees participating in or serving children in university programs must participate in mandatory Child Abuse Prevention online training on the appropriate conduct around children, protecting children from abuse and neglect, and reporting of known or suspected child abuse and neglect.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to access and transmit information using a computer and do so for extended periods of time.

  • Work varied hours including weekends and evenings as determined with supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university in mathematics or related field is required.

  • Two years of related experience is required, such as instruction or tutoring of students in 3rd grade through middle school, either through online or classroom instruction.

  • Additional (graduate) education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in mathematics or mathematics education or related field is strongly preferred.

  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to quickly learn new software, as needed.

  • Familiarity with online education technologies is a plus, such as Moodle, Teams, and Zoom.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
