Position Summary Information

Position Purpose

Commonwealth University of PA is searching for applicants to fill multiple Custodial Worker 1 positions. Full-time and Part-time positons available. Shifts include 6:00 a.m. -- 2:00 p.m. with rotating weekends, or 4:00 p.m. -- 12:00 a.m. with rotating weekends.

The home campus for these positions is Bloomsburg.

The incumbents perform routine manual work in the custodial care of the campus buildings and furnishings, including cleaning and clearing of building entrance walkways.

Description of Duties

These positions are considered essential personnel positions.

  • Cleans, waxes and polishes floors, lavatories, commodes and showers, following established methods and procedures using appropriate equipment and cleaning materials.
  • Dusts and polishes furniture, woodwork and brass fixtures.
  • Replaces light bulbs and make simple repairs to furnishings and equipment.
  • Removes trash, shovels snow and sweeps sidewalks at building entrances.
  • Moves furniture to clean and to accommodate special furniture arrangements for specific events, as instructed.
  • Identifies supplies needed and informs Custodial Worker 2 so that they can be ordered and delivered from central supply.
  • Participates in education and training courses as requested.
  • Practices safety measures to prevent accidents and injuries, and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Locks and unlocks rooms and/or buildings, as necessary.
  • Collects trash from trash containers, separates materials for recycling, and removes trash from buildings.
  • Informs Custodial Worker II of building, equipment, and furnishings needing repair and/or maintenance.
  • Completes Custodial Work orders daily by writing additional duties performed on orders and checking listed items when work has been completed.
  • Completed work orders are to be turned in to Custodial Worker II for transmittal to Custodial Services office weekly.
  • May drive University vehicles to assist in moving furniture or supplies and/or run errands, as requested.

Applicant Rating Criteria

1) Cleaning experience in an educational, healthcare, commercial, institutional or industrial environment or other professional cleaning services.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and use appropriate equipment in moving furniture and supplies.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn the operation and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines and other custodial equipment.
  • Ability to learn and practice the materials, methods and procedures used in cleaning operations.
  • Ability to climb and safely use a 10' ladder.
  • Ability to learn and practice the materials, methods and procedures used in cleaning operations.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with a diverse group of people.

     

Essential Functions

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside with adequate equipment, but is subject to weather temperature changes and physical exertion in lifting, moving and operating equipment.

  1. Sitting --0%; walking -- 35%; standing -- 65%
  2. Working indoors -- 95% and Outdoors -- 5%
  3. Reaching for objects at, above and below shoulder
  4. Frequent twisting at waist, and stretching to reach objects
  5. Frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing between 25-50 pounds
  6. Frequent pushing and pulling of objects weighing over 50 pounds.
  7. Counting and basic math skills
  8. Reading skills including understanding written documents
  9. Limited verbal communication and writing skills
  10. Sensory skills, i.e. visual and touch
