Binghamton University seeks an inspiring and visionary leader to become its next Senior Director of Operations in Facilities Management.

One of four research universities in the SUNY system, Binghamton enrolls more than 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students in its six schools and colleges. Binghamton's main campus is spread over 930 acres including a 190-acre nature preserve and wetland area with a six-acre pond. Facilities Management provides maintenance, renovation and a wide array of other services to nearly 118 buildings combining to over 6.6 million square feet. In addition, Binghamton has two satellite campuses in downtown Binghamton and downtown Johnson City, both in close proximity to the main campus in Vestal. There are approximately 550 dedicated individuals working in the Department of Facilities Management.

Position Overview:

The Senior Director of Operations at Binghamton University will oversee and manage the operational, financial, and administrative functions of the maintenance and operations division in Facilities Management. This role requires strong leadership, strategic planning, and collaboration to ensure the effective execution of the university's mission, goals, and objectives. The Senior Director of Operations will work closely with department heads, faculty, and staff to enhance operational efficiency and service delivery.

Operations is responsible for the day-to-day functioning and routine maintenance of buildings, building systems, grounds and utilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads an efficient, effective, innovative, responsive, and empowered facilities team and promotes a culture of respect, continuous improvement, employee satisfaction, customer service orientation, and a commitment to diversity in the organization.

  • Places high emphasis on customer service and develops methods to measure/assess service levels provided by Facilities Management throughout the university.

  • Oversee day-to-day operations ensuring efficient use of resources and alignment with the university's strategic initiatives.

  • Oversee the critical maintenance program.

  • Manage the operational budget, including the development, monitoring, and reporting of financial plans, ensuring cost-effectiveness and accountability.

  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and practices that promote efficient workflow and optimize resources across the department.

  • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of administrative and operational staff, providing guidance and professional development opportunities.

  • Collaborate with academic and administrative units across the university to ensure cohesive, cross-departmental coordination.

  • Evaluate and improve operational systems to enhance service delivery, minimize risk, and ensure compliance with university policies and applicable laws.

  • Coordinate facilities management, technology, and other logistical needs to support the goals of the department.

  • Prepare regular operational reports for senior leadership, highlighting key performance metrics and areas for improvement.

  • Lead initiatives aimed at streamlining processes and implementing technology solutions that foster innovation and improve efficiency.

  • Support strategic planning efforts, including resource allocation and project management for departmental initiatives.

  • Represent Facilities Management on designated committees and work groups.

  • Will participate in the formulation of applicable university policy.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in architecture, engineering, facilities management, energy management, environmental sciences, construction, business management or a related field and five to ten (5-10) years of experience in a related field with progressive leadership experience preferably in a university or large-organizational setting

OR

  • Associate's Degree in architecture, engineering, facilities management, energy management, environmental sciences, construction, business management or a related field with ten to fifteen (10-15) years of experience in a related field with progressive leadership experience preferably in a university or large-organizational setting

  • Proven experience in budget management, financial reporting, and resource allocation.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to lead and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders

  • Knowledge of operational best practices, policy development, and compliance within a higher education environment

  • Proficiency in project management and the ability to handle multiple projects with competing priorities

  • Experience in a union environment desirable

Work Environment:

This position requires on-campus presence at Binghamton University, with occasional travel for meetings and conferences. The Senior Director of Operations will work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment that values innovation, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
