What will you be doing in this role?

Patient Mobility Specialist takes a leadership role in the development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of education programs/projects related to Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) initiatives for patients, personnel and the community across the health care continuum. The job works with the nursing staff to implement and ensure the appropriate lifting techniques and machinery for patients are being applied. The Mobility Specialist provides education that is consistent with California legislative code AB 1136 for safe patient handling, The Plan for Provision of Patient Care, CSMC Code of Conduct, the Performance Improvement Plan, the Patient Education Plan and professional organization standards. They are responsible for ensuring that staff maintains competency skills in SPHM including the ability to interact with people of diverse cultural backgrounds and identify the ability of the adolescent, adult and geriatric patient to follow direction/instructions and give consent to any mobility procedures. Identifies safety concerns and institute measures to provide a safe environment and prevent patient and staff injury. The Mobility Specialist is responsible for providing education on safe handling techniques and equipment and assuring staff competency in this area.

Summary of Essential Job Duties:

  • Develops curriculum for safe patient handling training and equipment.

  • Provides and precisely documents usage of safe patient handling equipment.

  • Provides experienced care and patient education on safe patient handling equipment.

  • Responds to requests from nursing staff within 15 minutes.

  • Provides care to special patient populations and patients with diverse cultural backgrounds.

  • Identifies patient’s readiness for learning and ability to receive instructions and give consent.

  • Identifies and make special adjustments as required to the specific population needs, including cultural, spiritual, age, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, education, family and condition needs.

  • Adheres to CSMC policy for Safe Patient Handling, as well as OSHA and CA legislative requirements (AB 1136).

  • Collaborates with nursing team to settle patient’s current mobility level and provides input on type of equipment to use.

  • Advocates for a “no manual lifting” culture in the medical center.

  • Performs department rounding to ensure equipment and linens are available and in working condition.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

  • Collaborates to problem solve and make decisions to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Establishes effective working relationships with cross-functional team(s).

  • Responds timely, effectively and appropriately to deliverables.

  • Shares knowledge, time and expertise to assist other members of the team.

  • Cultivates and maintains strong customer relationships and rapport with partners and/or client groups.

  • Ensures practices and procedures are inclusive of interpersonal and cultural diversity.

  • Identifies and responds appropriately to both internal and external customer needs utilizing available resources.

  • Represents the company with external constituents.

Qualifications

You'll be successful with the following qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma/GED. Bachelor's Degree highly preferred.

  • Three (3) years of experience in direct patient care (EMT, CNA, Lift Team, patient education preferred)

  • Basic Life Support Certification (BCLS) Approved by the American Heart Association.

  • Expert with lift equipment and devices to mobilize patients safely. Demonstrated proficiency with lift machinery.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning theory, curriculum development, outcome study methodology, data management implementation and evaluation.

  • Participate in professional growth activities such as conferences, classes, and staff meetings.
