Zendar Software Engineering Manager (Hybrid) in Berkeley, California

Who We Are:

Zendar is creating a high-resolution radar imaging system that has resolution similar to lidar, allowing cars to see the driving world in all conditions and at long distances to travel at high speeds. We want to change the role of radar in the Advanced driving assist (ADAS) sensor stack and demonstrate that radars can take on many of the functions of lidar at a much lower cost. Zendar has pioneered a software-defined radar technology which fuses data streams from multiple sensors to build a more accurate scene and utilizes machine learning to understand the environment. All of this works in an embedded AI processor with tight latency and performance guarantees to deliver reliable sensing and perception.

Zendar was founded in the San Francisco Bay area, at the very heart of one of the most advanced regions in the development of advanced vehicles technologies. We also have offices in Wangen (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) and Paris (France).

Zendar has a diverse and dynamic team of electrical, mechanical, RF, algorithms and software engineers with a deep background in sensing technology. Zendar is backed by Tier-1 VCs, has raised more than $50M in funding and has established strong partnerships with industry leaders. Our team has more than doubled in number over the last year as our technology has gained traction in the automotive and agriculture industries.

Who You Are:

In this role, you will lead our Core Software team. This team is responsible for the software platform that underpins most of the company's workflows, including:

  • The evaluation kits used by leading global automotive OEMs to test and evaluate our radar systems

  • Interfaces to all sensors, including radars but also reference sensors such as cameras, lidars, and GNSS/INS

  • Entrypoints and orchestration of live processing pipelines for running our signal processing and ML pipelines in real-time on an edge compute

  • UI for operating our data recording systems and evaluation kits, as well as for visualizing real-time sensor output

  • Tools for data playback used by our algorithm teams in their development

  • CI/CD and testing workflows

Because of the large surface area owned by the Core SW team, this role will have a high internal and external visibility. You will regularly interact with our customers and partners as well as with every other internal team (product management, algorithms, ML, hardware, and HPC).

As a Software Engineering Manager for the Core SW team, you will

  • Own the release roadmap for our Core SW. You will work directly with all stakeholders (business, product, and eng teams) to negotiate and deliver the functionality that creates the most business value for Zendar.

  • Manage cross-functional initiatives, including either customer programs or major internal projects that require contributions from multiple teams.

  • Manage a team of 7-10 software engineers including performance management, hiring, and coaching to help them grow and increase their skills and impact

  • Nurture a high-performance software engineering culture, bringing in best practices where applicable and creating a development culture which balances urgency and speed with quality. As the leader of the most “pure software” team at Zendar, you will have a lot of influence in defining our development practices as well as our culture around SW engineering.

  • Contribute technically to the team's projects, at times through design reviews and system architecture, and at times through direct code contributions, depending what each project needs most.

What We Look For:

  • 3+ years experience in people management of software engineering teams

  • Excellent project management, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills. Ability to work with diverse teams distributed globally and build strong relationships with your peers and partners.

  • Strong emphasis on reliable execution. Comfortable defining and adjusting goals, and ability to lead complex projects and deliver reliably even when facing significant challenges.

  • Strong software engineering and design skills in Python and/or C++.

  • Deep experience with software engineering practices such as version control, release management, CI/CD, and testing practices; and good judgment to know how to balance rigor vs speed to deliver the most business value in a startup environment

  • Eagerness to challenge yourself, learn new skills, and adapt as the company grows.

Bonus Points:

  • Deep C++ experience with embedded programming and/or systems programming (eg kernel or device driver development)

  • Experience working with sensors and real-time high-performance compute pipelines such as edge AI or image processing

  • Experience with automotive software development practices such as A-SPICE, ISO 26262, MISRA, etc

What We Have To Offer:

  • Opportunity to make an impact at a young, venture-backed company in an emerging market

  • Competitive salary ranging from $160-220k annually depending on experience

  • Performance based Bonus

  • Benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance, flexible PTO, and equity

  • Hybrid work model: in office 3 days per week, the rest… work from wherever!

  • Daily catered lunch and a stocked fridge (when working in the Berkeley, CA office)
