ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

Deschutes County Health Services supports over 400 staff in Behavioral and Public Health programs working to promote and protect the health and safety of the community in a broad variety of community-based settings.

This position is part of Public Health service area, which works to keep people healthy and safe by striving to improve and protect the health of people in Deschutes County. This work includes: disease prevention, surveillance and control; food and consumer safety; assuring clean and safe drinking water; ensuring access to essential health services; providing education about healthy lifestyles; implementing strategies to reduce and prevent high-risk behaviors among youth; and responding to pandemics and emerging threats, outbreaks and other events.

ABOUT THE JOB:

The Medical Assistant at the sexual and reproductive health clinics works side-by-side with nurse practitioners or physicians to prepare and interview patients for visits, and tests and performs administrative duties, as assigned. Duties include: checking-in/out patients; verifying patient information; recording medical history; confirming purpose of visit; preparing patients for examination by performing preliminary physical tests, and vitals; maintaining and recording inventory; placing, verifying receipt and delivery of orders; maintaining a safe, secure and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards/ procedures, and complying with legal regulations; preparing for and assisting with clinical procedures, including care and sterilization of instruments; preparing specimens for daily pick-up; and maintaining clinic flow.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Medical Assistant:

  • Facilitates, encourages, and fosters professional clinic workflow; understands the programs and computer systems used within the clinic for tracking patient care; creates, labels, and properly stores all patient information; demonstrates skill working within electronic health record systems.

  • Gathers, orders, and manages specific lab requests; ensures all specimens and forms are accurately labeled and remitted to the appropriate location.

  • Performs point of care testing, and maintains quality controls; administers vaccinations and medications, and documents properly in electronic health record system.

  • Maintains and follows up on patient orders and referrals, as needed.

  • Assists, supports, and helps the provider during standard procedures; readies, sterilizes, and prepares equipment needed for appointments, anticipates various tools and instruments that will be required, and calmly engages with clients; follows infection control measures and sterilization techniques.

Certified Medical Assistant(in addition to above responsibilities):

  • Manages clinical pharmacies’ organization and materials. Is responsible for bi-weekly inventory of pharmacies, assessing medication supply needs and preparing pharmacy orders for Clinic Supervisor.

  • Maintains and assists with updates to all patient education materials in consultation with Clinic Supervisor.

  • Knowledge of registration process, various programs and payers, appointment types and scheduling. Ability to answer clinic and Public Health phones, providing redirection of calls to appropriate departments. Understands the various Health Services programs and County departments and their services.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING:

Knowledge of or experience with:

Medical Assistant:

  • Medical screening techniques, interviewing techniques, and HIPAA regulations.

  • Basic understanding of human anatomy and medical terminology.

  • Customer service and client interaction.

  • Applicable federal, state and local compliance laws and statutes.

Certified Medical Assistant(in addition to above knowledge/experience):

  • Intermediate understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and medical terminology.

Skill in:

Medical Assistant:

  • Applying public health principles and practices in a regulatory environment.

  • Using discretion, interviewing skills, and independent decision-making abilities.

  • Written and verbal communication to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, professional agencies, and community members.

Certified Medical Assistant (in addition to above skills):

  • Performing phlebotomy.

Compensation

$3,168.78 to $4,246.49 per month for a 138.14-hour work month.

$3,327.20 to $4,458.80 per month for a 138.14-hour work month. For those possessing current certification through a nationally recognized Medical Assistant certification program, such as AAMA, AMT, NCCT, or CCMA.

This union-represented position is available immediately.

Minimum Qualifications

Medical Assistant:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent;

  • AND one (1) year of experience working in a clinical setting as a Medical Assistant;

  • OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.

Certified Medical Assistant:

  • Three years of experience working within a health or human services field;

  • OR Certified Medical Assistant with one year of experience working in a health or human services field.

Preference will be given for:

  • Certified Medical Assistant.

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

  • Experience with EHR system Epic.

Necessary Special Requirements

Driving is a requirement for this position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.

Must have dependable transportation and be able and willing to drive throughout Deschutes County in sometimes adverse weather conditions.

Physical Requirements.Must have the ability to work in an office that is environmentally controlled; possess sufficient hand coordination to perform keyboarding and data entry at an advanced level; arm/hand movements to retrieve work materials and operate a variety of general office equipment; visual acuity to read small type; and the ambulatory ability to attend meetings in other offices or conference rooms. The position is frequently required to sit, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, reach, stand, grasp, talk, hear, see, and may occasionally lift up to 10 pounds.
