Are you a passionate leader with the desire to disrupt current health and safety practices and driven to reduce the risks associated with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) through a practical, business focused approach? We are expanding our team and looking for talented Ergonomists to support our business. In this role, you will provide technical ergonomics expertise by applying scientific techniques, standardized assessments, and problem-solving skills to drive innovative solutions that reduce MSD risk factors and optimize performance. You will work collaboratively with partners in Workplace Health and Safety (WHS), Operations, and Engineering to develop interventions that are fit for purpose and effective. This includes working closely with other ergonomists who work in the field and who are integrated with our industrial design and engineering teams. This role requires innovation and willingness to think outside of the traditional paradigm to excel at devising practical solutions to prevent MSDs. This role requires travel at least 40% of the time and will support the America's including North and South.

Key job responsibilities

The ideal candidate shall:

• Use a variety of ergonomic tools and methods to assess and quantify risk both pre and post intervention

• Use data analysis and assessment to provide design driven, practical recommendations and actions

• Initiate, formulate, and develop multi-disciplinary/multi-stakeholder projects that reduce musculoskeletal disorder risk factors and enhance human performance

• Execute a systems approach that considers the broader context of the human in the environment

• Research and collect background and historical multi-source information specific to topical areas using both internal data sources as well as with being actively aware of external trends

• Use data to facilitate and drive business decisions.

• Identify key trends through deep dive analysis and establish testable project hypotheses

• Develop or implement research, investigation, or analysis protocols.

• Work across multiple teams such as operations, technology designers and engineers to analyze and evaluate data, conduct evaluations, and generate concepts, design specifications, and usability goals

• Document analyses, recommendations, and results in white papers

• Stay current on trends in technology, industry, and legislation that could necessitate adjustments or provide improvement to our ergonomic programs, and initiatives.

A day in the life

In our team, we lead the building and development of the ergonomic footprint globally with proactive projects to identify MSD risk reduction opportunities through engineered and design change in targeted processes, growing our ergonomic network, while also providing consultant services to our active sites for ergonomic support they require.

Days are therefore often split between technical analysis work, solution development, liaison with site stakeholders, mentoring and sharing of knowledge and time on sites taking measurements and observations and writing up study findings. In addition, you will collaborate with in-country Operations, WHS, and Engineering leaders. Throw in a few meetings along the way, and it's a pretty full day!

About the team

This role forms part of our Global Ergonomics Engineering team. The team is part of the overall Global Ergonomics group , supported by a team of specialists in Ergonomics, Programs, Solutions and Developments, Change management, and Business Analyst, and all work towards the same goal of risk reduction for our associates.

Our team focuses on creating engineered interventions for our sites, driving the safety of our associates through reduction or elimination of MSD risk.

Basic Qualifications

  • 2+ years of program or project management experience

  • Experience using data and metrics to determine and drive improvements

  • Experience owning program strategy, end to end delivery, and communicating results to senior leadership

  • Bachelor’s degree in ergonomics, industrial engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related field with an emphasis on physical ergonomics/occupational biomechanics

  • 5+ years direct experience in industrial settings as a physical human factors/ergonomics engineer, or physical ergonomics/occupational biomechanics.

  • Demonstrated experience applying biomechanical, psychophysical, and metabolic analysis methods in an industrial setting. Knowledge and experience of interpreting information from tools such as: the Assessment of Repetitive Tasks (ART) tool, biomechanical data (peak and cumulative compressive forces, shear force, moments), the Key Indicator Method for Manual Handling Operations (KIM-MHO), the Liberty Mutual Equations, metabolic energy expenditure equations, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lifting Equation and its derivatives, the Occupational Repetitive Action (OCRA) method, and the Recommended Cumulative Recovery Allowance (RCRA) method.

  • Analytical and statistical background that includes quantitative and qualitative data analysis

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience managing multiple simultaneous projects and tasks while meeting and exceeding deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in ergonomics, industrial engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related field with an emphasis on physical ergonomics/occupational biomechanics

  • 10+ years direct experience in industrial settings as a physical human factors/ergonomics engineer or physical ergonomics/occupational biomechanics.

  • Knowledge and skill using digital human modelling applications including but not limited to: 3DSSPP, Siemens Process Simulate Human, Santos, or equivalent

  • Knowledge and skill with CAD applications is advantageous

  • Knowledge and skill with direct measurement methodologies including motion capture, electromyography, heart rate monitoring, oxygen consumption is advantageous

  • Knowledge and skill applying predetermined motion time systems including but not limited to: MTM, MOST, MODAPTS or equivalent

  • Programming/scripting using Python or Matlab advantageous

  • Proven experience in research management, design, and communication shown by way of first author peer reviewed publications, conference proceedings and technical reports.

  • Ergonomic Certification (AEP, CPE, Chartered Ergonomist and Human Factors Specialist or equivalent), or ability to become certified required.

  • Experience implementing lean principles and process improvement in an operational environment

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $92,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
