Job Summary
Join our Library as a part time Youth Customer Service Technician! In this role, you'll work in our children’s programming department, connect with our diverse community, and provide friendly and knowledgeable customer service to our citizens. As a part of the team, you will design and implement programs for children and families…from STEM programs for pre-teens, to book clubs, to story times. You will get to help us enrich the minds of Baytown’s next generation of readers.
Performs tasks directly involving customer service to the application of standard library routines learned on the job.
When assigned to the Community Development Block Fund: This is a grant funded position.
Duties
When Assigned to Homebound:
Searches for materials requested by patrons, recommends substitutions to patrons or purchases to professional staff, and performs readers’ advisory services.
Interacts directly with the homebound public through the drop-off and pick-up of library materials, registers patrons, explains lending rules, executes procedures to assure the return of overdue materials, maintains digital records relating to reader preferences, and educates patrons about digital services.
Interacts directly with the public in executing basic reference services; responds to inquiries, directs readers to research and reading materials, and assists patrons with using the library and its technology, including digital media downloads.
Manages senior outreach programs and represents libraries at community events.
Drives library vehicles. Maintains full responsibility for operation of vehicles in absence of Lead Librarian.
Assists in creating and maintaining Library and book displays.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
When Assigned to Public Service:
Interacts directly with the public in executing basic reference services; responds to inquiries, directs readers to research and reading materials, and assists patrons with using the library and its technology, including digital media downloads.

When Assigned to Outreach:
Interacts with the public in executing basic reference services; responds to inquiries, directs readers to research and reading materials, and assists patrons with using the library and its technology, including digital media downloads.
Plans and participate in programs and events that promote library service and community engagement.
Works with library and community engagement staff to expand representation at community events.
Works with community organizations to develop partnerships that positively impact the community.
Maintains an outreach calendar and organize supplies for outreach events.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
When Assigned to Youth Services:
Interacts with the public in executing basic reference services; responds to inquiries, directs readers to research and reading materials, and assists patrons with using the library and its technology, including digital media downloads.
Designs, plans, and leads a variety of programs and events for children and families.
Works with library staff to expand representation at community events.
Participates in department planning.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (must obtain TX driver’s license within 90 days).
One year of related experience in a library or other customer service or community-centered environment.
Knowledge of genres and authors.
Preferred:
Associates or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or institution.
Bilingual in English/Spanish.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Skills in both oral and written communications, dealing with children and the Spanish speaking public. Knowledge of basic functions of a computer and of library procedures and techniques. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications. Effective search engine skills. Knowledge of basic bookkeeping functions. Ability to count and handle money and operate printing equipment. Must have excellent customer service skills. Ability to get along appropriately with co-workers and the public. Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
