COMPANY OVERVIEW

JOB SUMMARY Outreach and engagement (O&E) is one of the most important aspects of any science project in the Arctic and at its most fundamental levels requires patience and perseverance. UIC Science has built a solid O&E program over the last 5 years and this position will continue to expand on that foundation. The O&E Manager will be responsible for growing a solid team that will work with researchers and communities to ensure that science is done in a responsible manner and can benefit the communities that it happens in. One of our missions is to bring the science back to the community. We do this with various public and school events. This position will actively engage with researchers and the community to ensure this is done in a productive way. This position will have the following duties and responsibilities to build and manage the programs we have and hope to make available to our clients:

Responsibilities

  • Manage O&E project scope, schedule, and budgets, and submit change requests to clients as needed

  • Supervisethe Science Liaison(s) and ensure adequate tasking is available to support the position.

  • Be able to work in various media to create podcasts and visually stimulating flyers/programs.

  • Includes any weekly/monthly submittal of the program as contractually specified.

  • Engage with the community of Utqiaġvik and outreach to other communities to establish co-production when possible.

  • Continually monitor and report on progress with various O&E projects.

  • Liaise with various entities and institutions like the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission, Barrow Whaling Captains Association, Arctic Ice Breaker Coordinating Committee, Arctic Domain Awareness Center, Various non-profit and for-profit corporations etc.

  • Create and present presentations at conferences to expand the need for co-production.

  • Set up and manage local outreach and engagement events with the aid of the Science Liaison.

  • Develop a committee to plan for and execute annual BARC Science Fair in July in Utqiaġvik.

  • Attend various meetings and events to represent UIC Science and be willing and able to present at different events.

  • Prepare estimates of O&E project cost and scope for proposals.

  • If not located in Utqiaġvik, travel to Utqiaġvik to provide support to events as needed is required.

  • Develop additional O&E projects and programs to expand and grow the overall UIC Science O&E department.

  • Work directly with UIC Science Project Managers to responsibly include outreach activities in their project’s scope.

Other Duties

  • Maintain records of all events attended or hosted on company drive.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicant must be familiar or have worked in and around Indigenous Communities in the Arctic.

  • Experience working in a science field is preferred.

  • Bachelor of Science or similar experience required Master’s Degree in science preferred.

  • Must have advanced computer skills, MS Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint

  • Applicant must be willing to travel.

  • Applicant must have experience presenting to large groups.

  • Any applicants that have past O&E Experience will be looked upon more favorably.

  • Must have prior experience with developing mixed media

  • Valid State Driver’s License and be able to drive a company vehicle.

  • Must pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing
