The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law is seeking a Clinic Managing Director. This position will be filled at the Managing Director or Senior Managing Director level depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications. * Established in 1824, the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law is the fourth oldest law school in the nation and the state's flagship law school. Home to top scholars and change-makers, Maryland Carey Law is a leader in legal education, scholarship, and community engagement. Maryland Carey Law is advantageously located in downtown Baltimore near multiple courthouses, government agencies, prominent law and financial firms, nonprofit organizations, major-league sports facilities, theaters, and fine arts. The law school campus also is easily accessible within the greater Washington DC-Baltimore metropolitan region, close to I-95 and only 40 minutes from Washington by Amtrak or commuter rail. Our Clinical Law Program ensures that our students graduate from law school understanding the role and professional responsibilities of lawyers. Student attorneys develop tangible professional skills while expanding access to legal services in our community. Each year, more than 20 faculty and approximately 150 student attorneys provide more than 75,000 hours of free legal services to the community, making the Clinical Law Program one of the region's largest public interest law firms. Maryland Carey Law was the first law school program in the country to receive the John Minor Wisdom Award, the American Bar Association's leading public service honor, and in 2023, the Clinical Law Program celebrated its 50thanniversary. The Clinic Managing Director is a critical member of the management team of the Clinical Law Program. This position oversees and monitors Clinic activities including budgets, accounts, client services, personnel, and procurement. The Managing Director is the first to be consulted with administrative matters of the Program, deferring to the Faculty Director as appropriate. Responding to the needs of faculty and 100 students per semester is a regular staple of the job. Ensuring that the highest level of client service is delivered, the Managing Director is the administrative anchor of the Clinical Law Program and is expected to use their legal expertise in client service, case management and administration to work with the professors and attorneys in the Clinical Law Program. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: _Managing Director level_ • Supervises administrative and paralegal personnel in alignment with Clinic objectives. Manages assignments and workflow, approves timesheets and leave requests, and conducts performance evaluations. • Manages the day-to-day operations of the Clinic, in consultation with the Clinic Faculty Director. Develops and implements administrative procedures to support all aspects of clinical practice including communication, file maintenance, archiving and personnel. • Stays current on best practices and innovation in clinical legal education and experiential learning. Under the supervision of the Faculty Director, develops and implements procedures to support clinical practice and education. • Prepares and presents the Clinic Orientation program at the beginning of each semester, in consultation with faculty and the Faculty Director. Develops and manages content for the All Law Practice Blackboard Course. • Manages student admission to practice. Primary advisor to students on clinic course selection, registration, and case management. • Manages student enrollment, registration, and waitlist process for clinical courses in close collaboration with the Office of Registration and Enrollment. • Assists in academic advising of students in collaboration with Academic Affairs. • Gathers and analyzes data required by malpractice insurance carrier. Responds to requests for data information from other clinical programs and public and private agencies. • Collects and maintains student conflict of interest data. • Supervises and maintains client information system. • Assists with the production and distribution of newsletters and brochures and assists in developing and making presentations as necessary to market the work of the clinical law and externship programs and develop a network of supporters. • Assists with management of grants and proposal development. • Administers the budget of the Clinical Law Program. Gathers data needed for grant applications and evaluation. Manages litigation and escrow accounts of the Clinical Law Program. • Performs other duties as assigned. Senior Managing Director level Perform all listed duties of the Managing Director in addition to: • Support the program's Faculty Director in the operation of the program's and objectives. Oversees the program's operations in the Faculty Director's absence. • Establish and strengthen relationships with members of state and federal government offices, agencies, and legislative bodies, and serve as an expert resource in connection with their policy-making and legislative activities. • Establish and coordinate an effective marketing/communication plan with the Faculty Director and UMB leadership to promote the program. • Directly assist the program's Faculty Director in the development and presentation of the strategic plan. • Oversee final approval of expenditures in accordance with established policies and procedures. • Oversee recruitment, selection, development, and retention of team members and other related staff as needed. • Partner with Academic Affairs in improving public interest advising for students. • Collaborate with the Faculty Director, Advisory Board, and/or other community stakeholders in prioritizing focus areas of the Center/program on an ongoing basis. • In collaboration with the Faculty Director, Advisory Board, and/or other relevant staff to assess current services and programs, and develop ideas for changes or innovative programs of the Center/program. • Perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * *Managing Director level Education:Juris Doctordegree from an American Bar Association approved law school. Experience:Three (3) yearsexperience in professional administrative and/or program/practice management required. Background in public interest law practice preferred. Supervisory:Supervisory experience preferred. Other: *No substitution of experience for minimum education requirement. *Senior Managing Director level * *Education:Juris Doctor degree from an American Bar Association approved law school. Experience:Eight (8) years of experience in legal, professional administrative and/or program/practice management required.Background in public interest law practice preferred. Supervisory Experience:Two years of experience at a management/leadership level. Other:* No substitution of experience for minimum education requirement. * * *KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * Advanced legal skills, knowledge, and judgment in the use of fundamental legal principles and concepts. * Knowledge of best practices in departmental field. * Ability to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision. * Strong counseling and academic advising skills. * Consultation and change management skills. * Leadership, coaching, teambuilding, and interpersonal skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships. * Ability to network and interact, as well as support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals. * Excellent strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make decisions. * Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects as well as conduct research and information gathering. * Ability to handle multiple ongoing tasks that require daily or weekly updating and attention. * Demonstrated excellent oral and written communications, presentation, and interpersonal skills. * Ability to prepare grants and reports. * Ability to create and manage a budget. / / HIRING RANGE:$104,000 - $115,000 per year at the Managing Director level and $126,000-140,000 at the Senior Managing Director level.
