Exempt regular staff receive a generous leave package that includes over 4 weeks of vacation accrued each year, paid holidays, unlimited accrual of sick time, and comprehensive health insurance; professional learning and development programs; tuition remission for employees and their dependents at any University System of Maryland school; and flexible work schedules and teleworking options (if applicable per job). /For best consideration, submit an application by July 24th, 2024./ Primary Duties * Contributes to the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of the campus chemical safety program in accordance with all applicable state, and federal regulations, including the OSHA hazard communication and laboratory standards (29 CFR 1910.1200 and 29 CFR 1910.1450). * Works with EHS laboratory inspectors to ensure effective application of the Chemical Hygiene Plan in University laboratories and other settings. * Supports development and review of standard operating procedures and chemical safety and security protocols for laboratory operations that might include toxins, explosives, carcinogens, highly reactive materials, and other particularly hazardous chemicals. * Assists with the administration of the University laboratory chemical inventory system and the Controlled Dangerous Substance Program. Performs safety and security inspections to evaluate compliance with state and federal regulations. * Serves as a liaison and provides specialized reviews for campus compliance committees such as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). * Assists with drafting technical correspondence, creating educational materials, and participating in outreach campaigns to promote the health and safety of faculty, staff, students, and visitors. * Assists investigators and staff in interpreting regulations and guidelines on chemical safety management issues, the control of chemical health hazards, and selection of equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), and supplies. Helps to coordinate with the EHS Environmental Programs team on matters of hazardous chemical/waste disposal. * Responds to and assists with the mitigation or emergencies and spills involving hazardous materials. * Performs other duties as assigned. Education:Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, toxicology, chemical engineering, or other relevant field. Experience:Three (3) years progressive work experience in the field of environmental safety and at least one (1) year of chemical safety experience. A master’s degree may be substituted for two (2) years of experience. Other:No substitution of experience for minimum education requirement. Offers of employment may be contingent on applicant obtaining medical clearance by university approved medical staff. Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines and instructions. Position will require employee to work with hazardous materials or be in areas where radiation producing equipment, radioactive materials, chemicals or infectious agents are present. Employee is required to wear personal protective equipment and a respirator in certain circumstances. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of position requirements.
