Microsoft Corporation Cloud Network Engineer II in Atlanta, Georgia

The Azure WAN (Wide Area Network) Team is growing and we’re looking for a creative and detail oriented Cloud Network Engineer II who can combine networking experience with software development fundamentals. Focusing on the global backbone network and collaborating closely with partner teams in Azure Networking, you’ll play a crucial role in designing, developing, and building networking and automation components for the Wide Area Network. You will oversee these components from the initial design phase through development and buildout. Responsibilities

  • Applies knowledge of network technologies to contribute to network design, implementation, and operation.

  • Independently develops reliable, scalable, and high-performance designs for network components, and features; assists with producing and maintaining design documents and implementation plans.

  • Develops network components (e.g., device, software, tools) based on customer, business, and technical requirements that have been defined in partnership with engineering and Program Management teams; ensures that designs meet all functional, performance, scale, and compliance requirements with minimal guidance.

  • Actively participates in design and network or code reviews to identify risks and prevent classes of bugs prior to production release, define essential details related to network implementation (e.g., physical connectivity, power, protocols, telemetry), and shares best practices in implementing and qualifying designs based on relevant past experience.

  • Demonstrates some knowledge of data — knows what data is needed, knows how to find new or missing data, and can describe defects and their relevance to product and service targets; identifies patterns and trends in data and interprets them to inform decisions related to products and/or services.

  • Contributes to the design and implementation of automated tools and services to increase engineering efficiency, reduce operational burden, and reduce human errors in production; uses existing automation and makes suggestions for improvements to existing automation to increase efficiency and reduce errors based on learnings and experience.

  • Proactively shares information across disciplines within their feature team in a timely manner with an appropriate level of detail that is tailored to their audience; proactively manages dependencies for their work with others.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation

  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field AND 2+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation

  • OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 1+ year(s) technical experience in network design, development, and automation

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation

  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 5+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation

  • OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology,or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation

  • OR Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, OR related field

  • Network engineering experience in a cloud provider, internet service provider or large enterprise environment

  • Experience with routing protocols such as BGP (Border Gateway Protocol), and MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), ISIS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) and Segment Routing

  • Professional software development experience in the networking domain, including Python, YAML, C#, REST, and workflow systems

Cloud Network Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.
