GENERAL JOB SUMMARY :

Establishes, implements, and monitors laboratory policies and procedures. Ensures lab operations are efficient, effective, and comply with established procedures.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC POSITION SUMMARY :

The Lab Management Specialist is responsible for coordinating and observing chemistry labs, and ensuring lab safety, for approximately 1800 freshman chemistry students per semester. Incumbent is responsible for determining supply purchases, intervals for purchasing, and determining equipment needs. This position manages lab equipment, ensures functioning, and trains for the proper operation of lab equipment, and supervises undergraduate and graduate students working in the labs.

GENERAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :

Provides technical lab support by performing complex laboratory- and research-related tasks, which support faculty and graduate students with research projects.

  • Applies expert technical knowledge of equipment construction and troubleshooting, fabrication and machining, and other complex laboratory and/or other research methods and equipment functions.

  • Performs a variety of tests requiring a high degree of proficiency.

  • Troubleshoots problems and recommends solutions.

  • Evaluates experiment results using statistical analysis.

  • May instruct a laboratory academic section in research techniques, instruments, methods, and procedures

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Coordinates labs for approximately 1800 freshman chemistry students per semester, which includes designing, building, calibrating, and maintaining instructional lab experiments and facilities. Works with faculty to develop experiments. Sets up experiments, prepares all chemical solutions needed, and prepares and maintains lab equipment. Collect, inventory, and dispose of all chemical waste (hazardous & non-hazardous) associated with the freshman chemistry labs and work with the Dept. of Environmental Health & Safety. Maintains cleanliness and organization of teaching labs and stockroom.

  • Responsible for student supervision, equipment training, and lab safety training. Trains and instructs students in the proper operation of lab equipment and equipment capabilities. Serves on the department safety committee. Ensures safety procedures are implemented and followed, including regular inspections of safety equipment.

  • Observes labs and supervises students and graduate teaching assistants and labs as they occur, which can be from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Ensures implementation of lab safety procedures and safe practices. Applies knowledge of equipment to troubleshoot and aid the graduate students in case of equipment malfunction during the lab periods. Recommends solutions to improve experiment methods. Writes and maintains job duties for the Teaching Assistants.

  • Responsible for determining supply purchases, intervals for purchasing, and determining equipment needs. Works with the department chair to determine funding allocated for purchases and manages purchases within the allocated budget. Works with the Business Service Center to make purchases. Responsible for inventory of all the necessary chemicals and equipment for the freshman labs. Manage the shipping and receiving of said orders.

Minimum Qualifications:

Comprehensive knowledge of lab and research support typically obtained through an Associate’s degree in a science or technical field and a minimum of 2 years of laboratory and/or research support experience.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is acceptable. Specific knowledge, certifications, and licensure will apply at the position level.

Valid driver’s license

Chemical Hygiene Safety Training (OU EHS provided)

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and at least one year of supervisory experience.
