About Our Opportunity

We are currently hiring a full-time, non-exempt Water Maintenance Worker I to join the Water Resources Department. The purpose of this position is to provide a variety of responsible unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled work in maintenance and construction of water lines and fixtures, and asphalt and concrete repairs for the City's Water Resources Department. Non-Exempt, Full-Time, 40+ Hours Per Week, Overtime, Including Nights and Weekends, or as Needed in all types of weather

Base Work Schedule is Monday - Thursday: 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM.

(Emergency coverage 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM); Saturday and Sunday Emergency On-Call Standby Coverage only (Occurs approximately every ten weeks)

Essential Duties and Responsibilites

  • Prepares and transports materials and equipment to job site in and removes debris unsuitable for backfill from site using dump trucks, front-end loaders, and related equipment.

  • Performs maintenance and repair of tools and equipment.

  • Participates in a work crew in digging and backfilling trenches, installing or removing water pipes and fixtures, and installing traffic safety devices.

  • Operates motorized equipment within knowledge, skills and abilities of this classification in the installation and repair of water mains, water lines, pumps, valve boxes, hydrants and associated fixtures.

  • Flags traffic as required when job site is in a major road or dangerous road/curve.

  • Works on a crew installing or removing of water taps and mains, water valve boxes, hydrants and associated fixtures; assists in repairing and replacing such fixtures; places pipes and fittings into excavated ditches; works on a crew that bores under roads to install pipes; installs meter boxes valve vaults or manholes.

  • Must display initiative and ability to perform hard manual labor in all weather conditions, ability to lift up to 100 lbs, and use a shovel for extended periods of time.

Supplemental Functions:

  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalency required with some experience involving interaction with the general public.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Must have a current NC Driver's License.

  • Must obtain Class A CDL NC Driver License within 6 months.

  • Must obtain Class C Water Distribution Certification within 2 years of hire date.

Knowledge:

  • General knowledge of learned procedures, practices, routines to deal effectively with routine work.

Skills:

  • Ability to read and understand basic workplace data, such as simple forms, tables, graphs, schedules, etc.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written form.

  • Ability to analyze situations to pinpoint problems and assist with solving problems or identifying sources of obstacles.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments.

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural guidelines and to apply this understanding to tasks.

  • Ability to bring resources together to resolve a problem or provide a solution.

  • Ability to become knowledgeable of parts and tools required to perform maintenance and repairs on the water main system.

  • Ability to follow safety guidelines, policies and procedures that are mandated by OSHA and the City of Asheville.
