The J&J IM Discovery, Product Development, & Supply (DPDS) Postdoctoral Fellowship Program helps early career scientists gain the training and experience needed to further their careers while addressing the needs of global healthcare. Postdocs work side-by-side with DPDS scientists on innovative research projects and have the opportunity to present and publish their work. They also learn the functional role of scientists in the pharmaceutical industry and receive valuable career advice from mentors while building a network of professional contacts and developing the skills needed to advance their careers.

This two-year Postdoc program will focus on the design, discovery, development, characterization, and performance assessment of known and/or novel pharmaceutically acceptable Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as drug delivery vehicles. The selected candidate will work in Chemical Process R&D (CPRD) to design robust, safe and scalable processes for neat and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) loaded materials with the desired properties. This requires a strong cross-functional collaboration with Analytical Development (AD) for material characterization & stability testing, and Pharmaceutical Product Development & Supply (PPDS) for pharmaceutical characterization as well as performance testing to generate holistic understanding starting from the selection of the crystalline hybrid materials and their components, the associated solid form landscape, manufacturing process and storage conditions, and eventual API release performance of the in biopharmaceutical relevant media via in vitro dissolution and potentially generating proof of improved bioavailability in preclinical species. Additionally, the candidate will develop a thorough understanding of the intellectual property landscape of MOFs.

As a Postdoc scientist, you will operate under limited supervision with a high level of autonomy to transform innovative ideas to concepts and practical solutions consistent with the project objectives. You will be tasked with drafting critical research questions, and with the ideation, design, planning and execution of experiments to address those. Activities in scope will include screening of raw materials and excipients, process development and scale-up, structural characterization and performance assessment to establish structure-property-performance relationships. On the job training will be provided by qualified staff. Additionally, you will be authoring reports and scientific publications and present data to the scientific community internally and externally. This position will require hands-on lab work, while offering ample scientific leadership and personal growth opportunities through training, mentoring and R&D-wide connectivity.

Position Responsibilities (included but not limited to)

Discovery, synthesis and characterization of pharmaceutically accepted MOF as drug delivery vehicles

Process scale-up of the tailored MOFs

Development of loading protocols for the inclusion of preselected APIs on the target MOF materials

Application and performance assessment of the porous hosts in combination with the APIs

Development, training, conferences, internal meetings & symposia

Qualifications

A PhD degree in a scientific or technical field e.g. in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Bioscience Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences or closely related field.

Demonstrated competency and experience in organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, chemical thermodynamics, porous materials or reticular chemistry, and/or characterization with understanding of material properties.

Excellent knowledge of and hands-on experience with relevant analytical techniques for materials characterization (crystallinity, adsorption, stability), and performance evaluation.

Experience with small molecule crystallization and/or pharmaceutics is a clear be nefit.

Familiarity with computational chemistry for materials discovery is valued.

Proven ability to transform innovative ideas into tangible concepts and practical solutions within the project timeline.

To make your ideas practical, you must possess a good amount of innovation and creativity and be able to think and act unconventionally.

Organizational, planning, problem-solving and scientific/technical leadership skills needed in the completion of the postdoc project deliverables, with a clear eye for safety in a lab-based setting.

Track record of scientific contributions, including peer reviewed publications and presentations, and/or patents.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and efficient information exchange in English.

On-site presence (Beerse, Antwerp area, Belgium) and hands-on execution of lab activities.

Background in MOF synthesis and characterization

The successful candidate may be involved to a limited extent in external (e.g. CDMOs) and academic collaborations.
