Summary

The Rackham Graduate School seeks a multimedia designerto serve as a member of the communicationsteam.

Rackham Graduate School's mission is to partner with University of Michigan graduate faculty and programs to advance excellence in graduate education, to cultivate a vibrant and diverse student community, and to impact the public good through the scholarship and discoveries of its students and degree recipients. To assist the graduate school in delivering on this mission, the communications team seeks a multimedia designer to assist with graphic design for print and digital assets, basic video editing and production, and occasional accessibility remediation.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a three-year term-limited position.

Rackham is currently offering hybrid work schedules to staff, requiring 2-3 days per week on-site with the remaining time being remote.

Responsibilities*

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Graphic Design (Digital)

  • Create digital assets that can be used in various channels, including web, email, newsletters, social media, video, and presentations.

  • Adhere to web best practices, Rackham brand standards, and accessibility guidelines.

  • Adjust and color correct photography and image assets from several different sources for digital channels.

  • Use professional-grade cameras and equipment to capture high-quality photos and videos of events, products, people, and locations as needed.

  • Curate and upload content to and help with metadata management of content in the university's digital asset management system.

Graphic Design (Print)

  • Design a wide range of print pieces, including invitations, brochures, posters, event collateral, signage, and donor stewardship pieces.

  • Apply the Rackham brand and style guide creatively while upholding the graduate school's brand identity and standards.

  • Adjust and color correct photography and image assets from several different sources for print materials.

  • Use professional-grade cameras and equipment to capture high-quality photos and videos of events, products, people, and locations as needed.

  • Work with external vendors to keep projects on time and under budget.

Basic Video Editing and Production

  • Use Adobe Premiere and Media Encoder to edit and render video, including adjusting

  • audio volume, splicing multiple videos or segments of videos with appropriate transitions, adding branding and copyright to the beginning and end of the video, and adding captioning.

  • Review videos to determine quality and any issues.

  • Plan, oversee, and edit short video content to convey our brand's message and tell captivating stories.

Accessibility Review and Remediation

  • Use Microsoft Word's accessibility checker and accessible design best practices to improve the accessibility of Rackham documents.

  • Convert accessible Word documents into accessible PDFs using Acrobat's accessibility tools.

Required Qualifications*

A high level of general computer and software proficiency, with extensive experience in design and layout software, especially Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, AdobeXD, Premiere). Experience with Microsoft Office and Google tools.

Website and HTML email design and development experience with a working knowledge of HTML/CSS.

Ability to translate design solutions across a variety of digital channels.

Solid understanding of web accessibility standards and a demonstrated commitment to designing with those standards in mind.

Demonstrable experience in working independently to create high quality printed or digital content. Ability to take multiple projects simultaneously from start to finish with minimal supervision, often on tight deadlines.

Ability to positively translate feedback, whether received from clients or from performance analysis, into work that meets the needs of clients and supervisors.

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport, work effectively, and thrive in a collaborative, team-based, positive work environment.

Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion, and handle people with diplomacy under stressful situations and in matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.

Knowledge of and strong personal commitment to shared teamwork, continuous business process improvement, and professional development.

Understanding and value of diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.

Ability to occasionally transport equipment to various locations within the building or to other campus locations, and set up/tear down equipment as necessary.

Desired Qualifications*

  • 3+ years of multimedia design experience.

  • Experience in a higher education, philanthropic, institutional advancement, or marketing-related setting.

  • Previous experience designing environmental graphics and promotional items.

  • Website development and authoring experience and/or knowledge of a content management system, including a deep understanding of HTML/CSS and user interface and user experience design.

  • Ability to produce original illustrations for use in print materials and digital platforms.

  • Experience working with a project management system.
