Summary The MIT (vascular) functions as a lead and is expected to display leadership skills and professional behavior supporting the mission and goals of the service and agency. The MIT operates medical equipment using Doppler, B-mode, duplex ultrasound, blood pressures and photoplythesmography to obtain and record high quality, accurate data related to blood vessel anatomy and physiology. Responsibilities Total-Rewards-of-an-Allied-Health-VA-Career-Brochure.pdf Duties are but not limited to: The MIT (vascular) Lead functions as an integral part of the healthcare team by serving as a subject matter expert, effectively leading technical staff and assisting in the units' growth and development in addition to performing non-invasive diagnostic vascular examinations as requested by the healthcare provider and other technical or clerical tasks as might be required. Including, but not limited to: - Provide technical, clinical, and equipment guidance. -Demonstrate an understanding of vascular hemodynamics and ultrasound physics which is essential to perform, understand, and interpret non-invasive diagnostic vascular testing. -Obtain a patient history and perform an appropriate physical assessment based on patient presentation and type of exam to include observation, inspection, auscultation, and palpation. -Proficiently operate medical equipment to obtain the highest quality image and data utilizing the appropriate transducer frequency, Doppler angle, focal zones, gain, depth, color map, wall filter and sample volume. -Obtain audible and visual data accurately and provide accurate Doppler information obtained from peripheral vessels; demonstrate characteristic differences related to their perfusion; accurately quantify disease and identify and correlate specific waveform analysis, plethysmographic tracings, pressure gradients characteristic of: normal, obstructed, or occluded vasculature. -Produce preliminary reports to provide objective data to document pathology and disease progression or regression, including documentation of procedural difficulties in the medical record. -Adhere to established examination protocols while recognizing indications for further studies beyond established and standardized procedures. - Apply knowledge of complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in those procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects and to write policies, procedures and protocols that pertain to vascular ultrasonography. -Serve as clinical preceptor to students enrolled in a vascular ultrasound degree program who obtain their clinical education within the unit. Maintain appropriate professional credentials (RVT or RVS) to serve in this role and embracing its responsibilities. - Develop and maintain a Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement program in compliance with IAC standards. - Facilitate meetings with technical staff, ancillary staff, and the Medical Director of the PV Lab. - Remain adaptable, reliable, loyal, trustworthy, and strive for excellence in their daily work. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". GS-9 Grade Determinations: Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to fully perform all vascular ultrasound tests and examinations and to function as a technical director of the vascular laboratory and provide oversight and/or guidance to other technicians. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSA 4 is to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. 1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to vascular ultrasonography. 2. Knowledge and experience of joint commission and other regulatory requirements. 3. Knowledge and experience of communicating effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. 4. Knowledge and experience to provide for, staff development and training. Special Assignments. Non-supervisory vascular technicians may have assignments that because of their nature substantially exceed the full performance level. The Professional Standards Board will review proposed non-supervisory special assignments for the GS-9 level and make a determination regarding their appropriateness. These assignments are expected to be relatively few in number and must represent substantial additional responsibility over the full performance level. Lead Vascular Technician. In certain programs, either because of their size and scope or because of a lack of specific supervisory positions, lead positions may be appropriate. Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Certification. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable. Preferred Experience: Graduate of a Diagnostic Medical Sonography/Vascular Technology Program accredited by the Joint Review Commission on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS) and Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). At least ten years of experience which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties to proficiently perform noninvasive diagnostic peripheral vascular procedures and effectively lead people. Current registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARMS) as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT). Physical Requirements: On a frequent basis during the tour this position requires the technician to endure extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending, lifting, and twisting. The technician is required to regularly carry and push moderately heavy items. The technician must be able to use hands to handle, manipulate, feel objects, tools, and controls The technician is required to view computer monitors and type for extended periods of time. The technician must be able to audibly detect the presence or absence of an audible signal and must be able to visualize details at close range, distinguish colors, and shades of gray. Education There is no education substitution at this grade level. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
