Center for Campus Involvement Overview

The Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) is a dynamic, student-focused department that serves all undergraduate and graduate students through programs, student organization administration, and learning and development. Through meaningful involvement, CCI creates transformative experiences, a vibrant community, and lifelong memories for University of Michigan students. CCI recognizes and supports over 1,600 student organizations through education, advising, advocacy and services. CCI also implements over 300 social, educational, and cultural programs each year, focused on building community within and beyond University Unions' facilities.

University Unions Overview

University Unions (UU) drives community building and belonging through the integration of its three student unions (Michigan Union, Michigan League, Pierpont Commons), Center for Campus Involvement, Campus Information, academic meeting and dining facility (Palmer Commons), and close partnership with Conference & Event Services and Michigan Dining to provide student-focused and customer-oriented service to the campus community. Total budget volume for University Unions approximated $20 million. University Unions directly employs over 50 regular staff and 250 student staff.

Job Summary

You will lead the Student Organization teams responsibilities within the Center for Campus Involvement to provide well-considered services and processes to meet the needs of 1600+ student organizations. You will directly supervise 3-4 full time staff and indirectly supervise 3-4 graduate interns and 25-30 undergraduate organizational peer advisors and their respective areas of work. You will drive community building and belonging through student organization administration, spaces, and services. You will be responsive to needs on campus with students and partners related to student organizations, including annual registration, policies, learning and development, assessment, accountability, activism, and advisor support.

Responsibilities*

Leadership of Functional Area (40%)

  • Provide management assistance to the CCI Associate Director and Director in the leadership and support for 1600+ student organizations with an intentional focus on integrative learning, assessment, leadership, managing risk, student organization accountability, event planning, and training staff in schools/colleges and units who support student organizations.

  • Hire, train, and supervise 3-4 full-time staff, 3-4 graduate interns, and 25-30 undergraduate student employees who work collaboratively to build community and create student life on campus through student organization involvement.

  • Ensure daily operation of Maize Pages (student organization management system), the IdeaHub, and the Student Organization Resource Center (e.g. staffing models, customer service, space reservations).

  • Partner with CCI staff and campus colleagues to provide a well-considered plan for building community and belonging through student organizations and programs across campus.

  • Use KPIs, learning outcomes, and other assessment tools to regularly update and influence student organization work.

  • Analyze, evaluate, and determine various decisions in consultation with CCI Associate Director and Director.

  • Remain student-focused, collaborative, future thinking and creative in student organization initiatives.

Student Organization Administration, Spaces, and Services (30%)

  • Provide oversight of the Student Organizations team in CCI to ensure the highest quality student organization engagement and learning programs for student leaders and their advisors.

  • Ensure student organization leaders and advisors are educated about University policies and abide by national, state and local laws.

  • Manage the Maize Pages student organization management system.

  • Develop an ongoing engagement and organizational strategy for student organizations to use the IdeaHub.

  • Ensure the Student Organization Resource Center operations and advertising resources meet the current needs of University of Michigan students and staff, while also focused on revenue growth.

  • Support the Student Organization Advancement & Recognition (SOAR) process and policy updates.

  • Communicate Central Campus Diag policies to students and the campus community, including monitoring and responding to student activism.

Financial Management (20%)

  • Develop and track spending of budgets in partnership with CCI Associate Director/Director and Student Life Budget and Finance.

  • Uphold license agreement with the student organization management system.

  • Implement creative ways to drive revenue while containing costs.

  • Responsible for departmental purchasing and procurement policies and procedures.

  • Maintain accurate internal records and budget projections.

University Unions and Student Life Service (10%)

  • As a member of the CCI/UU and Student Life, serve on committees and work teams such as the UU Management Team.

  • Serve on the Student Life Activism Planning and Response Team.

  • Participate in staff training and professional development opportunities.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 1-3 years of student activities experience

  • 1-3 years of supervision experience

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, social work or other related field

  • 4 years or more of professional experience

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility

  • Responsible for budgets of approximately $500,000, ensuring high levels of financial integrity from staff and monthly budget reporting.

  • Develop budgets and achieve financial expectations. Balance the auxiliary needs of generating revenue with being focused on students as primary stakeholders.

Working conditions

  • Typical work hours that are adjusted based on weekends, evenings and other hours as required.

  • 1 Retail Manager

Additional Information

Selected candidates whose start date is after 4/1/2024 or before 8/31/2024 will not be eligible for the university FY 24-25 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
