Summary

This is a professional health and safety position focused on both research and academic laboratory and machine shop safety. The primary responsibility of this position will be to identify potential hazards, inspect facilities working with hazardous chemicals, toxic gases and physical hazards for health and safety concerns, and facilitate corrective actions and/or provide recommendations.

Responsibilities*

  • Conduct general lab and shop safety inspections

  • Track and oversee the timely completion of safety related corrective actions

  • Review laboratory protocols and conduct risk assessments.

  • Investigate safety and health related incidents and complaints and recommend or coordinate corrective action.

  • Perform air monitoring of chemical compounds and noise evaluations to ensure proper controls

  • Evaluate ventilation and engineering controls in laboratory settings.

  • Develop, coordinate, and conduct occupational health and safety education and training programs.

  • Respond to inquiries from staff and faculty regarding occupational health and safety concerns.

  • Prepare special and periodic reports, guidelines, manuals, newsletters, summaries, and bulletins.

  • Assist in the review of plans for construction and renovation of University facilities for occupational health and safety.

  • Participate on the emergency response team as needed to respond to incidents involving hazardous materials, which may include biological, chemical, or radioactive substances.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety, engineering, or a related scientific field.

  • 3-5 years of professional health and safety experience in laboratory safety, shop safety, occupational health and safety or other appropriate science-related employment experience.

  • Work experience consistent with that required for applicable professional certification such as Certified Industrial Hygienist or Certified Safety Professional.

  • Strong knowledge of industrial hygiene practices, occupational health, safety, ventilation, engineering controls, engineering principles and practices, and rules/regulations.

  • Knowledge of federal, state and institutional health and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA & MIOSHA, etc).

  • Knowledge of and ability to use computer applications, such as word processing, email, and databases.

  • Work independently, exercise initiative and judgment, and provide follow through with customers.

  • Must have a valid driver's license; ability to obtain commercial driver's license may be necessary.

  • Must be able to pass physical examination to allow for emergency response and wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.

Desired Qualifications*

  • A Master's degree in industrial hygiene, or a related scientific field.

  • Work experience in industrial hygiene, or related scientific field.

  • Experience investigating accidents and exposures preferred.

  • Some experience in program development and EHS project management.

Work Schedule

M-F daytime hours. Additional work hours may occasionally be required during nights and early mornings, and weekends to respond to emergencies or other time sensitive/critical events and to provide training for employees.
