Job Summary

The 4-H Animal Science Specialist provides statewide leadership and guidance on, and has responsibility for, all UMass Extension 4-H Youth Development Animal Science programs. The position is an integral part of the UMass Extension 4-H Youth Development State Leadership team and is supervised by the UMass Extension 4-H Youth Development Program Director. The position manages the risk associated with working with youth ages 5-18, volunteers, small and large livestock, and equine programs and serves as the livestock specialist for 4-H programs and staff.

Essential Functions

  • Provides complex statewide leadership for the UMass Extension 4-H Youth Development Animal Science Program and maintain overall responsibility for all 4-H animal science programs, including volunteer supervision and management.

  • Manages all fiscal compliance, volunteer screening and incident report management within the Animal Science Program.

  • Collaborates with the UMass Extension 4-H Youth Development State Team and CAFE leadership on policy review, risk management practices, and overall program management.

  • Supervises part time Animal Science program assistants and undergraduate students who aid in program delivery in schools, community centers, and at UMass Extension 4-H sponsored events.

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates 4-H Animal Science curriculum.

  • Organizes and teaches youth education and adult training sessions for 4-H members, 4-H volunteers, and 4-H staff. These include best practice workshops and orientations for volunteers, overnight programs for youth held on the UMass campus, and regional and national overnight 4-H Programs.

  • Responsible for management of the UMass Extension 4-H Youth Development Animal Science trust account and program budget.

  • Plans and conducts applied research and/or scholarly or creative activity as appropriate and collaborates in the development and writing of grant proposals. Works with other 4-H and UMass Amherst staff in collaborative programming.

Other Functions

  • Works collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.

  • Works in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master's degree (preferably in Education, Animal Science, Dairy Science, Equine Science, or another related field) and three to five (3-5) years of professional work experience, OR a bachelor's degree (preferably in Education, Animal Science, Dairy Science, Equine Science, or another related field) and five to seven ( 5-7) years of professional work experience.

  • One to three (1-3) years professional experience required in equine or livestock handling.

  • One to three (1-3) years of educational or youth development experience.

  • Must have a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Teams and other computer-based programs.

  • Ability to maintain a diverse schedule of local, regional, and statewide activity, which is not restricted by access to public or private transportation.

  • Excellent interpersonal and group process skills, and demonstrated ability to participate effectively in professional team efforts and with diverse groups of people.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability to implement adult education theories and practices with diverse audiences.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in several animal science areas.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment.

  • Will frequently handle large and small livestock, horses, and camelids.

  • Must be able to lift 50lbs and regularly be standing for 8 hours.

Work Schedule

  • Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm, or similar as determined with supervisor.

  • Frequent evening, weekend, and off-site work within diverse communities across Massachusetts is required.
