What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a scientist/engineer to join our team supporting world-leading research in semiconductor quantum systems. This position will play a critical role in the design, development, and operation of software tools used for the control and characterization of semiconductor-based spin qubits. The candidate will develop and utilize knowledge of data processing, hardware control, microwave electronics, and experimental techniques to develop tools for qubit control that support and enable R&D objectives.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Propose, design, develop advanced concepts for qubit control and gate operations, including implementing, validating, and deploying software for experimental quantum systems.

  • Collaborate to design and implement software to control quantum devices using arbitrary waveform generators, oscilloscopes, or FPGAs.

  • Work as a team on large-scale projects as part of a fast-paced technically challenging research organization.

  • Develop and apply your independent vision, creativity, and ability to pursue and achieve R&D milestones.

  • Communicate results in multiple venues.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

*The Sandia job code title for this position is R&D Physics

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in Quantum Information Science, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related STEM field plus one (1) or more years of relevant experience

  • Software development experience in languages and environments such as:

  • Python (numpy, scipy, pandas)

  • R

  • MATLAB

  • Experience interfacing with experimental control hardware (e.g., FPGAs, oscilloscopes, etc).

  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance and an SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience developing software in quantum information science relevant environments

  • Experience managing data across the full experimental lifecycle, from acquisition, through analysis, to disposition

  • Ability to work in a diverse, collaborative team environment

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to develop, deliver, and present technical ideas and results

  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new experimental techniques

About Our Team:

The Advanced Silicon Quantum Devices Department of the Advanced Microsystems Group conducts groundbreaking research on semiconductor-based devices for quantum information sciences applications. Our fundamental expertise lies in semiconductor-based quantum dot and donor-based qubits. Our core capabilities are semiconductor qubit development and measurement, quantum coherent control, cryogenic characterization and measurement, and quantum information science and technology. We use our positive relationships within the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications (MESA) foundry facility, the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT), and other internal and external organizations to develop advanced solid-state quantum device technologies.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
