What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Manufacturing Operations Engineer to help with process development, and qualification of components related to Metal Additive Manufacturing technology. Our technologies include laser powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition (powder and wire), wire arc, and bound powder extrusion. Our current research areas include Alloy Development, In Situ Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence, Process-Property-Performance-Structure, and Qualification/Acceptance. On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop technical solutions to challenging problems usually working on an interdisciplinary team

  • Interact with a variety of customers and seek funding to support work in various areas pertaining to additive manufacturing

  • Oversee safety and operations of a metal additive manufacturing laboratory working with staff, technologists, and students

  • Present work at technical conferences and to internal/external customers

  • Ensure that all equipment is operational and safe

  • Work with technicians on design of experiments for process development

  • Make expert recommendations about equipment, capability, and technology needs

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work 100% onsite.

Salary Range:

$81,900 - $185,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree, in mechanical, chemical or materials engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of science and engineering education and experience

  • Experience designing, modifying, optimizing and/or monitoring metal additive manufacturing processes and tools

  • Experience with CAD software (CREO and SolidWorks)

  • Experience with part and process qualification, and production of metal AM parts

  • Experience with Engineered Safety and Security Documentation

  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Knowledge of engineering systems and calculations and experience applying engineering methods and technology-aided engineering tools to conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.

  • Good customer relationship & communication skills

  • Experience with word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software

  • Knowledge and experience with post processing equipment to produce and characterize finished AM parts (wire EDM, surface grinder, metrology equipment)

  • Experience using GCode, CNC tools, and tool path generation

  • Skill in interpersonal communication with diverse co-workers and various personality/communication styles

  • Experience in developing and mentoring others to become successful

  • Strong dedication to quality, safety, collaboration, and teamwork

About Our Team:

The Advanced Metal Processing department 1812 provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of additive manufacturing, machining, laser surface modification, and laser machining for the Laboratories. The metal additive manufacturing technologies housed in this group encompass technologies such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS), Laser Wire Direct Energy Deposition, Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) and Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science, and systems-based engineering solutions.

Security Clearance:

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
