What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking an R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineering in the Primary Standards Laboratory. The Primary Standards Lab (PSL) is an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory providing metrology support to the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Calibrations supported by the PSL include electrical, microwave, flow, acceleration, shock, humidity, leaks, vacuum, radiation, optics, temperature, mass and dimensional measurement. The PSL maintains a wide variety of measurement expertise and consults on technical problems, calibrates reference standards, conducts research and development on measurement science and assists in the technical oversight of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Weapons Complex contractor standards laboratories. The overall calibration program is accredited by the NIST National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Support the daily operations of the flow, acceleration, shock, and humidity (FASH) project within the Primary Standards Lab.
Apply knowledge, experience, and technical aptitude in acceleration and mechanical shock measurements and the related systems, equipment, methods, and procedures.
Team with other PSL engineers and technologists to develop and execute plans and solve measurement and quality issues.
Research and support the development of new measurement technologies, techniques and procedures.
Provide oversight for the operation and maintenance of precision electro-mechanical calibration systems.
Mentor and coordinate activities of technologists and student interns, including technical training, scheduling, and workload management.
Travel on a limited basis to support NNSA technical surveillances and related activities.
Salary Range:
$99,400 - $193,600
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and experience defined by the following parameters:
An Associate’s degree in a relevant discipline plus four (4) years of directly related relevant work experience; or
A High School Diploma plus eight (8) years of directly related relevant work experience.
*Equivalent education and experience must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE “Q” Clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal Mechanical Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance.
Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in diverse teams.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
Experience with statistical methods of analysis and measurement uncertainty.
Experience with a broad application of instruments, assemblies, standards, and systems.
Experience working within a rigorous quality system in lab environment.
Desire to learn new skills as required and develop expertise in areas that may be unfamiliar.
Experience working with high-precision scientific measurements and calibrations, including primary and secondary vibration, primary and secondary mechanical shock, static acceleration, and non-contact vibration measurements (laser-doppler vibrometry).
Experience operating and maintaining electro-mechanical equipment, including electrodynamic shakers, pneumatic actuators, Hopkinson bars, and centrifuges.
Demonstrated ability to complete development, evaluation, and authorization of complex calibration systems, including all documentation meeting high-level technical, quality and ES&H requirements.
Motivated self-starter with demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team on day-to-day calibration activities, as well as long-term research projects.
Ability to deal with large workloads under strict deadlines.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to apply knowledge and ideas to solve engineering problems.
Demonstrated ability to develop technical documentation including calibration procedures, measurement assurance plans, drift analyses, and technical memos.
Experience using LabView, Python, or Visual Basic
Experience with ISO 17025, Z540, QC-1, NAP24, ISO 16063 and other quality assurance programs and specifications.
Experience in developing methods, processes, technical work documents and procedures.
About Our Team:
Department 2942 provides calibration support of Sandia customer assets and working standards used to identify product attributes and test system calibrations; including support of customer owned assets at the customer site and support for SNL research and production organizations. Department 2942 maintains a wide variety of measurement expertise and consults on technical problems, calibrates reference standards and assists in technical oversight of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Weapons Complex contractor standards laboratories.
