Minimum Qualifications Transfer appointment: Current New York State Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent-permanent status as Laboratory Specialist 1(G18), Laboratory Specialist Trainee 1 (NS) or Laboratory Specialist Trainee 2 (NS), OR a New York State employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent service in a title at or above G11 and determined to be eligible for transfer to Laboratory Specialist 1 (G18), Laboratory Specialist Trainee 1(NS), or Laboratory Specialist Trainee 2 (NS) under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. Laboratory Specialist Trainee 2, G-NS: A bachelor's or higher degree in bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, chemical science, chemistry, environmental biology, environmental science, environmental studies, environmental toxicology, genetics, medical technology, microbiology, molecular biology, or natural science AND one year of experience using a variety of laboratory techniques and equipment; coordinating laboratory testing and research activities; and/or directing specialized laboratory programs. Laboratory Specialist 1, G18: A bachelor's or higher degree in bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, chemical science, chemistry, environmental biology, environmental science, environmental studies, environmental toxicology, genetics, medical technology, microbiology, molecular biology, or natural science AND two years of experience using a variety of laboratory techniques and equipment; coordinating laboratory testing and research activities; and/or directing specialized laboratory programs. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a chemistry or analytical chemistry laboratory with standard preparation, sample preparation, sample extraction, and gas chromatography (GC) systems. Knowledge of quality assurance, quality control, and environmental laboratory regulations.

Duties Description Under direct supervision of a Research Scientist 2, the incumbent provides technical and scientific support to the Laboratory of Organic Analytical Chemistry’s Gas Chromatography Laboratory. Specific duties include: 1) Sample Preparation (30%)• Extraction and esterification of drinking water samples by liquid-liquid microextraction, following prescribed EPA methodology. • Prepare necessary standards and reagents related to the extraction. • Extract other organic contaminants in environmental matrices following existing SOPs, as needed.2) Sample Analysis (40%)• Analysis of drinking water samples by Gas Chromatography (GC) coupled with electron capture detection (ECD) for herbicides using prescribed EPA methods.• Validate herbicide proficiency test samples for the Division of Environmental Health Sciences PT Program.• Analyze other organic contaminants in environmental matrices following existing SOPs, as needed.3) Data Reporting/Record Keeping/Inventory (15%)• Enter test results into the Center Laboratory Information Management System (CLIMS). • Organize and manage all necessary test record-keeping responsibilities.• Review, revise, and draft SOPs as needed for approval.• Order supplies as needed.4) Instrument Maintenance (15%):• Assist with routine maintenance and record keeping on instruments and equipment used in the above analysis.• Troubleshoot analytical problems related to sample extraction and analysis.• Calibrate and validate support equipment at required frequencies and maintain records.
