JOB TITLE: Seasonal Summer Assistant

MUSTS: Significant Qualifying Experience (sustainable gardening, nutrition education, community food production, educational programming, and/or working with children, youth, and families from diverse backgrounds) Commitment to the missions of the Valley Educational Gardens Initiative and La Puente Home Willing to learn on the job and respond to needs of the organization as they arise Able to work on feet for long periods of time in adverse weather conditions Passionate about connecting people with nutritious food sources and stewarding garden spaces for community benefit Knowledge and interest in engaging with diverse groups of people Willingness to commit to at least 3 months with the position

SKILLS: Plant and gardening knowledge; especially as applicable to the San Luis Valley Experience leading groups of people in public spaces and offering free programming Proven leadership ability, public speaking and event planning Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task multiple projects Excellent verbal and written communication skills Basic Spanish language skills a plus

DUTIES: The Valley Educational Gardens Initiative (VEGI) empowers San Luis Valley youth and adults with knowledge to experience the joy of growing nutritious food from seed to harvest to plate so our community and our land thrive. We connect communities and partners across the San Luis Valley with garden-based educational opportunities and resources. Our programs encourage youth to make healthy choices and our garden spaces cultivate nutrient-dense produce that benefits area households, La Puente programs, and partner agencies. The VEGI program is a part of La Puente s Food Bank Network of the San Luis Valley (FBNSLV), and is one of the FBNSLV s initiatives to address food insecurity beyond the immediacy of hunger. Position Description: VEGI s Seasonal Summer Assistant will assist with various aspects of VEGI s programming throughout our main growing season. Assistant will work alongside the AmeriCorps member(s) to teach garden-based educational lessons focused on nutrition and environmental awareness with our partner sites, help maintain our 3 growing spaces, harvest vegetables, and provide general program support during the busy summer Garden Upkeep Overseeing garden tasks and priorities (delegating tasks, organizing garden needs, and assisting with daily maintenance, plant/soil health, basic repairs as needed and able, etc.) Gathering necessary supplies to support garden production and operations Coordinating harvest of produce and delivery to sites Reaching out to partners concerning their garden needs and coordinating assistance Tracking tasks and statistics (lbs. produce grown, daily/weekly priorities, etc) Working with Clients: Leading and co-leading projects for youth and community members in the gardens Assisting in garden development projects Helping manage produce set-up at Food Bank Engaging clients in gardening opportunities and responsibilities Volunteer Coordination and Community Outreach: Collaborating with community members regarding volunteer opportunities and coordinating tasks in the garden Attending and facilitating Monthly Community Garden Days Coordinating community volunteers and workgroups to participate in garden work and projects Educational Programming and Events: Help coordinate annual harvest festivities such as Stone Soup at Alamosa Elementary School Assist with lesson planning and coordinating garden lessons for the school year Assist with lesson planning and coordinating of PALS Garden Camp Support occasional one-time and ongoing events, workshops, and projects as needed Administrative Duties: Help maintain current records of consistent data intake and statistical tracking Assist with grant documentation and management Other responsibilities as assigned

WAGES: $17.00
